Energy Savings

Having a Rollac shutter system can provide long-term financial benefits in the form of appreciable energy savings. The average window loses or gains 70% of the heat in a room compared to a similar area of wall; this is the reason that double glazing is popular.

What Glazing does not help with is radiated heat - noticeably, the sun still feels hot through double glazing systems. Shutters can add an extra layer of energy insulation to those openings and make for significant energy savings.

This applies even more so to air conditioned areas where a shutter can effectively shield against radiating energy from bright sunlight and reduce the heat gain in a building. This reduction in heat gain can significantly lower the air conditioning load and reduce running costs for the building.

The Tests Are in!

Rollac performed a U-Factor computer simulation on two of it's popular shutters styles, the RLL55-X extruded and an A150-R Regular Foam shutter. Below are three tables, showing three different testing results.

Each Shutter was tested on four different types of window builds, with four different frames (16 testing types per shutter).

Terminology

U: U-Factor -

The rate of heat loss is indicated in terms of the U-factor (U-value) of a window assembly. The lower the U-factor, the greater a window's resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating properties.

SHGC - Solar Heat Gain Coefficient -

The SHGC is the fraction of incident solar radiation admitted through a window, both directly transmitted and absorbed and subsequently released inward. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The lower a window's solar heat gain coefficient, the less solar heat it transmits.

Rollac Reccomends

The testing below illustrates that foam filled shutters and extruded shutters perform comparitively in the energy conservation study. This means that no matter what shutter system you choose, you'll come out ahead in your energy savings.

The data shows a marked difference in all types of windows when rolling shutters are applied. This difference will lead to substantial savings on heating and cooling your home or office all year around.
